Onions in Sauce

Sounds bizarre, right? Well, I have weird hot dog toppings on my mind, since I’m writing an article about Michigan sauce, which — oddly enough — is found only in the northernest reaches of New York (more about this misnamed meat-based condiment later). So I’ve decided to explore other add-ons for America’s favorite cigar-shaped edible. (Don’t even get me started on the significance of this national obsession. Sometimes a hot dog isn’t just a hot dog.) First stop was “Push-Cart Style” onions in a tomato-ish sauce. Sounded harmless enough. But a taste-test left me wondering who would willingly put this in his mouth. I know, I know — the same can be said for hot dogs. That’s probably why hot-dog carts do their best business in high-volume drunk areas, like baseball games.
