Day 243

Molasses Cookies

These are definitely an acquired taste. And I’m not sure I want to go through the trouble of acquiring it. But this is a perfect recipe to make with kids — great fun to hand-stir the goopy molasses into the mix and then roll the little cookie balls in sugar. It came from a small living-history museum in Malone, New York:

The House of History Molasses Cookies

2 c. flour
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. molasses
1 egg

Sift together the first six ingredients. Add shortening and cut in well. Add molasses and eggs. Mix together with hands. Roll teaspoonfuls of dough into a ball then roll in extra sugar that’s been sprinkled on wax paper. Place on greased pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes. Store in airtight container.
