Beer-Battered Apple “Fries” (Slightly Scorched)

I found a recipe for these in Bittman’s How to Cook Everything and I thought I’d give it a try. I know I don’t like cooked fruit. But beer-battered and deep-fried? Maybe. I had a bit of trouble, though. (My husband is the deep-fryer in our relationship. I guess with good cause.) Most of them finished up on the other side of extra crispy, but there were a few that were still edible. I used granny smiths so they weren’t too sweet … and threw on a little sea salt for good measure. Bittman might be on to something.
