Day 176

Mint Julep

In honor of the run for the roses (I have a fiver on Take Charge Indy) I tried a bit of mint. But all this tasted like was a tumbler full of bourbon. Which would have been okay, but I’m a bit under the weather, so down the drain it went. Hope Indy doesn’t circle the drain too.

Day 169

Slutty Pasta

Puttanesca sauce — supposedly born of Italian whores — double-teamed me: I was exposed to both capers and anchovies in one night. (There’s supposed to be olives in there too, but I refused. I’ve tried those little bastards every which way. Just don’t like ’em.) Anyway, this strumpet snack was great. I’ll be visiting that corner again real soon.

Day 157

Aloo Mutter

This was frozen, sure, but it wasn’t half bad. Just potatoes and peas in a tomato-based sauce. It was another offering from workmate Kelly, who is attempting to broaden my Eastern horizons. There was some debate in the office about whether these first forays into Indian cuisine — apart from a traumatic ginger chicken debacle in the San Francisco bay area — should be of the boxed/frozen variety. But I guess it’s a start. I’m going to try to hit up my town’s only Indian restaurant this weekend to continue in the cause. I hear the place is pretty good — which is a rarity in our restaurant scene.

Day 147

Tahini Broccoli Pasta

While browsing the jam aisle last week for ingredients for the s’mores-a-palooza, I saw a can of tahini. Said sesame paste. I like sesame. And it was with the jams, so I figured it was some sort of spread. When I got back to the office and shared my score with my workmates, they set me straight — after having a good giggle. They even found me a tahini-based recipe for my experimenting pleasure. Not much pleasure, though, since the dish was overwhelmingly bitter. That didn’t seem to add up with what I’d heard, so I did a background check on this suspect ingredient. Verdict? It’s not supposed to be that bitter … at least not after it’s been properly paired. But it could have been an old batch. Someone also suggested that canned tahini is a potential problem. Or I’m just too darn picky.
